TAKE CARE OF YOUR SELF…
His name was Ganu. But he had acquired more names! Rikamtekda (The Idle Man),Useless , Saand (Bull/Lout), Fuktya (Freeloader)… and many more…
But the poor fellow endured everything! Opposing anyone was simply not in his blood! Whatever the person in front of him said, he would listen with his head bowed. His mother passed away when he was very young! And his father? He was rarely involved in his life!
After Ganu’s mother died, his father married again without much thought and expanded his family. He had two children with his second wife, and they grew up! Ganu had never received a father’s love in the first place!
It would have been a wonder if the second mother had not shown her true colors! Poor Ganu! He did every task he was told to do! He ate whatever was served to him! Be it stale-spoiled or leftover, he never even dared to look up and speak!
Yet, that mother would heap insults upon him! You eat for free, you don’t work! You roam around like a bull! You useless, idle man! Seeing her behavior, her children acted the same way!
But Ganu accepted it as his fate and kept enduring everything. But… something else was in his destiny… something yet to happen… something that was going to occur.
The house was large! All the house chores had to be done—cleaning, sweeping, drawing water from the well, filling the containers! Taking care of the cows and buffaloes in the shed! Not one, but a thousand chores!
Yet, Ganu pricked his stepmother Kusum’s eye like a thorn! She didn’t even want him in front of her. She was just waiting for the right opportunity!
And one day… she got her chance! It was evening time. Only Ganu and his stepmother Kusum were at home.
His father had gone out for some work. Kusum told Ganu to fill the water. Since it was winter, it got dark early. Moreover, it was a village! No electricity or anything! It was quite dark.
Ganu threw the bucket into the well. It fell into the water with a splash. The bucket filled with a gurgling sound. Ganu pulled the rope up and, as was his habit, poured the water into the tank. After doing this two or three times, he threw the bucket into the well again.
But this time, there was no sound of it hitting the water. The bucket was stuck somewhere. He gave it two or three jerks. But the bucket did not come loose.
He leaned forward to look. Kusum was watching him. She was waiting for the opportunity. And…. she played her hand. As Ganu peeked into the well, Kusum quickly went behind him and pushed him.
The well was deep. But there was plenty of water! Ganu fell into the well, floundering. He did not know how to swim! He kept flailing his arms and legs but fate was not going to side with him! Or maybe the thread of his life was not strong.
Such a tragic end came to an innocent life! He did not abandon his goodness until the very end! But… what next?
Kusum began beating her chest, claiming it was an accident. But everyone knew her behavior! And the main thing was that Ganu’s father was not affected by it at all. He wouldn’t be! Because that chemistry was different! First the wife was gone! Now the son! But this man was unmoved!
One chapter had ended !…..
Dinner was done, and the house went to sleep. And after some time… the grating sound of a broom began to be heard. Someone must be sweeping the courtyard!
Is it morning so early?
It must be Ganu. Ganu-sss?
How can it be?
He is… he… just yesterday…
Kusum was startled by her own thoughts! The sound of sweeping kept coming! Kusum saw that it was two o’clock at night. The sound was coming! It was impossible for it to be a delusion!
The sound of sweeping stopped. Kusum did not have the courage to look. She woke her father up two or three times. But that fellow was sleeping soundly. His own son had died, but there was no sign of any effect on him.
The rustling of grass, and the bellowing of the cows and buffaloes began. Someone was giving them grass! Then the sound of the bucket falling into the well was heard! Then the sound of pouring water into the tank! This routine continued for a long time. Then all the sounds stopped!
Kusum broke out in a cold sweat, even in the cold. And the latch on the door rattled! Kusum flinched. Immediately, a voice followed! “Mother, give me something to eat! Whatever is there, give it! Hey Mother, give me something to eat!”
As soon as she heard that, Kusum lost her nerve! She started screaming and wailing. Ganu’s father woke up. He couldn’t figure out why she was screaming? She just kept shouting. She kept saying, ‘Ganu, Ganu.’
Ganu’s father thought how much she cared for his son! The poor thing couldn’t bear the loss of the boy! He started comforting her. After a long time, she quieted down. And she slept like a small child with her knees drawn to her chest! Her gaze went to the window! Someone was outside the window! And whoever it was, was familiar! His voice was ringing in her ears.
Kusum was on the verge of going mad, but this was just the beginning. Somehow, the day broke. Due to extreme mental exhaustion, Kusum fell asleep in the morning.
After sleeping for a long time, she felt a little better. She woke up and finished all the chores. The day was short and the night was long. So, it didn’t take long for night to fall. Kusum was tired of explaining to her husband, but he wouldn’t listen. He wouldn’t stay home; he left.
At night, Kusum and her two children fell asleep in the house and… the sound of sweeping started in the courtyard. Kusum broke out in a cold sweat. The clock was showing two o’clock at night. In a little while, the cows and buffaloes started bellowing.
Someone was giving them grass. Kusum didn’t know what to do, in a little while the bucket fell into the well. The water was swiftly pulled up. It was poured into the tank.
Kusum was on the verge of going mad. The tank was filled. The footsteps started coming closer to the door. Kusum lost control of herself. The latch on the door rattled.
And the voice came.
“Mother, give me something to eat! Whatever is there, give it! Stale-spoiled, leftover-dirty, whatever is there, give it! Hey Mother, give me something to eat!” Kusum was trembling with fear. She started muttering:
“The idle man is dead! Even after dying, he wanders around! The lout! Go die, let me sleep!”
Due to her muttering, the children woke up. They couldn’t understand why their mother was behaving like this! Whom was she talking to, waving her arms and swearing. Seeing this, the children got scared. They huddled in a corner and kept looking at her.
Kusum’s muttering continued. She kept swearing… She got up, took out a plate, took the morning’s bread, took an onion, filled a metal pot, and walked quickly to the door and opened it,
“Take it, you dead man, and die!”
There was no one near the door. There was someone on the well’s edge who was beckoning her closer. Kusum had lost all sense of reality. She started walking towards the well with the pot and the plate, all the while swearing at that figure.
And in a few moments, there was a splash as someone fell into the well, followed by screams. Then silence, a terrifying silence!
The children’s attention was outside. They were trembling. In a little while, someone came near them in the dark. They didn’t understand who it was. But they understood the voice.
“Avi-Neeraj don’t be scared. Your Ganu Dada (older brother) is here, isn’t he! Don’t be afraid!”
The children either slept right there or fell unconscious; they didn’t know themselves. In the morning, they heard a commotion in the house. Then they woke up. Their mother was seen lying motionless in the courtyard.
They couldn’t figure out why she was sleeping like this and who was sitting on the well,
“Oh, this is our Ganu Dada! He met us last night, didn’t he! Hey Dada, don’t sit there, you’ll fall into the well!”
Saying this, the children ran towards the well and two more screams were heard from inside the well…
Two or three people rushed towards the well. Parab jumped into the well, lifted the children up to bring them out. But there was someone else besides him. Who was holding the children. Very gently!
Parab got a sudden chill! The realization that he was not alone was terrifying. A person’s mind is strange! Sometimes it is afraid of loneliness and sometimes of company!
Just then, someone from above threw a rope. In a little while, the children were pulled out of the well. Parab also came out holding the rope in some time.
He was trembling. The villagers thought that since it was cold and he was drenched, he must be shaking. But the fear on his face was telling a lot.
Shantaram asked,
“Hey Parab, what happened?” Parab stammered,
“Someone was in the well!” The villagers were surprised,
“Oh boy, you must have had a delusion.” said Shantaram.
“No, not a delusion. Someone was in the well, who was holding the children up. The well is deep. Otherwise, it would not have been possible for me to save both the children.”
The children were saved, they were unconscious, and water had gone into their nose and mouth.
Ganu’s father came forward. Someone had called the doctor. The doctor first checked Kusum, then the children. Kusum was dead. She had been dead for quite some time. But the children were unconscious.
The doctor treated them and saved them, bringing them to consciousness. They clung to Kusum, saying ‘Mother, Mother,’ and started crying.
The villagers and the doctor had only one question. Kusum was dead, and she was drenched, which meant she had fallen into the well. Who took her out and when?….
